Key achieved results

  • Second-year targets met at 100%. Publications by project year: Year 1 representative 5, Year 2 11 (SCIE 6, non-SCIE 5).
  • Modified biochar powder resistance reduced by about 221x, improving conductivity.
  • Conductivity of CNT-grown biochar (CGB) mortar improved.
  • Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) tensile material model validated.
  • RC member flexural and shear behavior monitored with DIC and AE multi-sensing.

Flagship outcome

World-first biochar concrete material model

We develop a finite-element material model for biochar cement-composite concrete. As the world-first biochar concrete material model, it secures a leading position in the related analysis-technology field.

Why it matters

Utilization and expected impact

  • Construction-sector carbon reduction and Net Zero: biochar carbon-sequestration materials are applied to the carbon-intensive construction industry.
  • Structural safety and field applicability: mechanical performance evaluation and RC member application reviews secure structural safety.
  • Durability response: countermeasures for drying-shrinkage cracking, freeze-thaw scaling, carbonation, chloride attack, and rebar corrosion.
  • Maximized physical and chemical stability: graphene synthesis maximizes the physical and chemical stability of biochar.
  • Real-time monitoring: conductive-composite strain data and AE multi-sensing enable real-time assessment of RC member serviceability and long-term behavior.
